Counselling with Mental Change

Counselling

Counselling is a professional talking therapy that provides a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, or simply feeling lost and unsure of what to do next. Counselling offers the opportunity to be heard, understood, and supported while working towards greater emotional wellbeing and a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Many people believe they have to face life’s challenges alone, but asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Counselling is not about being told what to do or having someone solve your problems for you. Instead, it is a collaborative process that helps you better understand yourself, recognise unhelpful patterns, develop healthier ways of coping, and build the confidence to make positive changes that last.

At Mental Change, I understand that every person’s story is different. There is no single approach that works for everyone, which is why I tailor therapy to your individual needs, goals, and experiences. My work is grounded in a person-centred philosophy, meaning I believe you are the expert in your own life. My role is to provide a supportive, compassionate, and respectful environment where you feel genuinely listened to and accepted without judgement.

Alongside my professional training, I bring extensive lived experience that has shaped both my understanding of people and the way I work. I have experienced childhood trauma, serious injury, permanent disability, bereavement, and mental health challenges. At sixteen, I was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that changed the direction of my life. Although I recovered enough to return to work, I was unable to pursue my ambition of joining the military. In 2010, my life changed again when a balcony collapsed beneath me, causing a spinal cord injury that left me permanently paralysed. Two years later, I suffered an anoxic brain injury, affecting my motor cortex and speech. These experiences have taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of hope, while giving me a genuine appreciation of the emotional impact that life-changing events can have.

While no two people’s experiences are ever the same, I understand what it means to rebuild your life, adapt to change, and find purpose after adversity. My lived experiences allow me to offer empathy and understanding that comes not only from professional training but also from having walked my own difficult path.

Professionally, I hold an Advanced Counselling Level 4 qualification, a Level 3 qualification in Counselling Children and Adolescents, together with Diplomas in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have also completed additional professional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, EMDR, life coaching, and mentoring. This allows me to draw upon a wide range of evidence-based approaches while always tailoring therapy to the individual sitting in front of me.

Whether you are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, stress, or simply feel that life has become overwhelming, counselling can help you gain clarity, build resilience, and move forward with greater confidence. At Mental Change, my aim is to provide a safe and supportive space where you feel understood, valued, and empowered to create meaningful, lasting change. Whatever has brought you here, you do not have to face it alone
